Jewish Cemetery Expedition and Archive (JCEAA)

JCEAA is a non-profit organization established in 2003 in Arlington, Virginia (USA).  The organization conducts site visits to Jewish cemeteries and burial grounds.  The purpose of these visits is to identify and document the location of the cemeteries, record site information, and make digital images for the JCEAA archive.  The goal of JCEAA is to collect and maintain information that will help preserve location data about Jewish cemeteries and gravestones.  JCEAA posts some information from the archive on its own web-site, as well as other locations (e.g., selected imagery is available on the JCEAA Flickr website.

 The "Expeditions"

JCEAA conducts its own site visits, lasting from just a day to several weeks.  Expeditions are researched and planned several weeks or months in advance.  JCEAA does not acquire imagery from external sources or providers.

Some investigative expeditions are also conducted to search for burial grounds that have not been documented well, or may not have been recorded.  All records, journals, logs, notes, and images collected during visits are retained in the JCEAA archive.  In 2009 JCEAA transferred images previously displayed on its own website to the JCEAA Flicker site.  In 2018 Flicker was purchased by SmugMug, which now hosts the JCEAA Flicker web site images.  Only a sample of the JCEAA image collection is published.

  The "Archives"

The JCEAA archive consists of trip plans and site survey data (e.g., GPS data, original digital images, visit notes and logs, cemetery sketches, and overhead imagery collected from a variety of sources.)

All physical materials have been digitally copied, and all digital materials (including images) are secured in accordance with professional archival standards.  JCEAA is a member of the Society of American Archivists (SAA), the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), and the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA).

 Non-Profit and Non-Commerical

JCEAA is a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Delaware (USA).  JCEAA does not conduct commercial activities of any kind.  Unsolicited contributions are not accepted by JCEAA.  Public requests for assistance from JCEAA will be considered, however no payments for services are requested or accepted.

COVID
Due to COVID risks, JCEAA minimized cemetery visits for a lengthy period.  In March 2022 a 7-day minimal contact trip to the southeast US was conducted resulting in about 40 visits.  As of September 2023, there is a new concern about a new version of COVID beginning to develop.  JCEAA will monitor
the safety for travel (flights, hotels, restaurants, high-visit cemeteries), but is temporarily suspending visits.  Time will
now be spent continuing to process a large backlog of
cemetery images for posting to the JCEAA Flickr site.
